Weekly Phrase #21
How to say in Hebrew
"To take place..."

Unfortunately, so many events did not take place this year, because of Covid-19. But that's ok! Because that just means we have more events that will take place to look forward to, and also - more time to learn Hebrew! Like this phrase for example. How do you think we would say "to take place"? Maybe you're thinking of "לקחת מקום", but that would mean to take occupy space. So when we want to say something took place, we use a verb meant for this exact purpose - "להתרחש"!

Let's look at a few examples:
⮞ The event took place yesterday - האירוע התרחש אתמול (audio # 1)
⮞ His party will take place tomorrow - המסיבה שלו תתרחש מחר (audio #2)
⮞ The movie takes place in Israel - הסרט מתרחש בישראל (audio #3)

But! we also have another verb that can be used - "להתקיים"! We use it the exact same way.

Here are a few examples:
⮞ The concert is supposed to take place tomorrow - הקונצרט אמור להתקיים מחר (audio #4)
⮞ Can the competition take place here? - התחרות יכולה להתקיים כאן? (audio #5)
⮞ Where is the class taking place? - איפה השיעור מתקיים? (audio #6)
So, what did you do just now? hopefully, you learned another useful Hebrew expression!

See you soon for another phrase!
