Of course, if you are meeting someone, you'd say לפגוש or להיפגש (random vs planned meeting) - but what about phrases such as "meet requirements", "meeting certain conditions"? Would we still still use the "meet" verb here? Chances are that we won't! It's an expression we are dealing with here. :D We don't expect expressions to be translated literally, are we? :)

So, if in English the requirements are "met", in Hebrew the requirements are "stood." :D Or, to be exact, one "stands in" requirements. Or deadlines, or conditions, for that purpose.
Let's have a look at some examples:
⮞ He didn't meet the admission requirements and wasn't accepted to the University. הוא לא עמד בתנאי קבלה ולא התקבל לאוניברסיטה. (audio #1)
⮞ In order to meet the schedule one has to perform all the steps of the process on time. על מנת לעמוד בלוח הזמנים יש לבצע את כל שלבי התהליך בזמן. (audio #2)
⮞ Meets the manufacturers' requirements. עומד בדרישות היצרן (audio #3)

However, quite often, this לעמוד ב- expression means more than that! It doesn't strictly correspond to the "meet" expression, it can have other translations!
Consider these examples:
⮞ I can't stand it any longer, not anymore, I can't! אני לא עומד בזה יותר, אני לא יכול יותר! (audio #4)
⮞ How can one work with people who won't keep to their word? איך אפשר לעבוד עם אנשים שלא עומדים במילה שלהם?! (audio #5)
⮞ The protagonist resisted the temptation and didn't touch the enchanted apple. הגיבור של הספר עומד בפיתוי ולא נוגע בתפוח הקסם. (audio #6)

However diverse, you can see that they all have one meaning in common - some standard that one is expected to comply with, to meet!
